Hi all,

I use to frequent the 'muscular training development' site until it vanished :crybaby: and I spent the last few years alone in the dark with no place to brag about my latest training sessions.... and here you all are!!! The names I can remember are Tyler, PTAron, Squatch, Kaje, Ben, and how could i forget Keith!

Anyway. I'm a simple bird from Bolton, UK (up-north). Use to train a lot until you all deserted me and left me to get fat on my sofa watchin Coronation Street. Now I'm here to make my way back to my profile pic which was 4 years ago. A lot can happen (to the cake-belly) in four years. Hope to get inspired again, inspire others and talk crap to whoever will listen (...or read).

A good dancer is a person who can make the audience feel the music and rhythm. Originally started by the working class group of Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo of Uruguay, soon became a vogue in other countries as well. Tango dance form is a combination of the Cuban habanera, Uruguay’s milonga and candombe. It also borrows a few steps from the African communities living in Buenos Aires. The flamenco tangos share a general forerunner with the European dance style.

After travelling many countries such as London, Paris and Berlin in the beginning of the 20th century, tango finally reached New York in the year 1913. In this city, tango was modified for the ballrooms which had less body contact. This style of tango is also known as ballroom tango. Even after the modification, many people were surprised. Around 1922, a set of rules were put forward for the ballroom tango due to which it started to lose its popularity to other dance forms like samba. The Argentine people who danced tango started to create a new and improved version of tango which differed in the style of holding, walking and music. This style of tango was named as Argentine tango. Argentine tango does not follow any set rules; in fact it is more spontaneous and easy to learn.

Whether your choice is ballroom tango or Argentine tango, learning is surely going to be fun with the Tango Dance Classes NYC. These classes or studios are located in New York City with numerous opportunities for learner from all genres and societies.

well, I've finally decided to take the plunge (in a month or two) and get a new computer. After talking to a friend of mine, I decided to build my own rather than go to Dell/HP/Mac/whatever (way more bang for my buck... which is important considering I don't have many of those).

However, I've kinda let myself get (WAY) behind the times with all the hardware stuff, so my head's spinning, and I was hoping to get some input.

Right now, I'm looking to get these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...t=Combo.475889

(and Windows 7 Premium Upgrade, which is ~ $110)

That would put me at right around $1000, which I think is decent for what I would be getting.

*Gym*: Lifetime Fitness

*Facility*: Typical Lifetime Fitness - 1 medium sized outdoor pool...

Gym: Lifetime Fitness
Location: Shelby Twp, MI (Hayes and Hall Rd)

Facility: Typical Lifetime Fitness - 1 medium sized outdoor pool (smaller than many other LTFs), 2 medium sized indoor pools, hair salon, cafe/store, daycare area, gym with basketball courts, racquet ball courts, rock climbing wall, massage rooms - and the workout area is upstairs.

Cardio Area: Huge selection of treadmills, stepmills, ellipticals, machines that simulate skating, UBEs, rowing machines, and bikes - several different brands. Most equipment is repaired quickly when damaged.

Weight Machines: The "Machine" section of the gym is well stocked and divided up by bodypart with several machines for each area of the body, and machines from Cybex, Lifefitness, Bodymasters, Nautilus, and Icarian. Unlike the Commerce Twp gym I didn't see staff cleaning the machines every day that I was there - but I saw them maybe once a week. I'm sure they were doing it at other times during the day.

Freeweight Area: Dumbells up to 150lbs, doubles of most dumbells up to 70 or 80lbs - more than 2 of some of the commonly used ones, which was really nice! Full line of Hammer Strength plate loaded machines for upper body, several other brands of plate loaded machines. Several flat and incline benches, one decline bench. 2 power cages, 2 squat racks, 1 deadlift platform, and 2 smith machines of different brands. They also have 3 different leg press machines, Hack squat, and powersquat. No Kettlebells like the Commerce Twp gym. This area also has one of the corners reinforced with steel so that it can be used as a pivot point for t-bar rows.

People/Atmosphere: This gym has a huge variety of people working out at it from all age groups. The time of day that I would workout (around 8:30am) was usually a time when the mad morning rush was tapering off, so it wasn't too crowded. There were always a few people that were moving some good weight, so there was a good motivation factor there. On the other hand there were also quite a few people just standing around talking to each other - but they were easily avoided.
Very friendly staff, always made sure to greet the customers by name (either before or after scanning your card depending on how new you were) - this is just a little touch that I personally liked.

I definitely recommend this gym for anyone in the area. It is a good fit for anyone from a serious gym rat to a "I just like to go to the gym and lift 10lb dumbells" type person.

Well guys/gals, I've been MIA for a while around here. I just started my 90 Day Challenge with ViSalus! My mom is a distributor for them now, so I decided to take the plung. I've put on a lot of weight and haven't been as active in the last couple years. Today I started this challenge, and even though its a 90 challenge, this is going to be my life challenge to get in shape and stay that way! Going to be starting out slow, walking/jogging then turn it up to running. Not too worried about weights right now, and my main goal for this first month is to shed the weight, the last 2 months I'll throw in the weights and start building myself up again. Look forward to keeping my own log, and I will post it on here every so often for you all to see the transformation. Damn, I have this diet stuff! haha. Well, you'll all be seeing more of me again, and boy have I missed this group!

While I was taking a shower, I realized that I have a checkup coming up in December. What's the big deal? you may ask... Well the issue is that I have an incredibly annoying doctor. For instance, he tired to order me to the hospital for a full battery of tests when my blood pressure was elevated last year... which was taken about an hour and a half after setting a rack dead lift PR. He grudgingly let me go with an appointment to come back in 3 months for another try. He's also become convinced that creatine and supplemental protein WILL kill me, and last but definitely not least, he's been trying to give me a prostate exam since I turned 21 (I'm 24...).

Now, he's very careful, and takes good care of his patients when something is wrong with them. I appreciate that, but I try to make sure nothing is wrong with me.

so, I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to start training for my Dr.'s appointment in December... get my cardio up and the like. As anybody who knows me knows, I HATE doing cardio. I'm just not built for it (a 30 inch inseam and a homeostatic weight of ~180 makes running suck). I'm thinking that I'm going to have to resort to HIIT twice a week (and take the week before my checkup off).

I swear I didn't make the topic justto bitch... I'd actually like some input on options and whatnot from our more cardio inclined members.

IXL has been one of the two gyms I've consistently trained at over the last 5 years (the other being UAlbany's campus fitness center).

From the road its difficult to make a first impression of IXL. You can tell that its a fairly sizable building by local standards, and you can see the mirrored windows of the cardio area... but that's about it.

The door leads directly to the reception area and front desk. Across from the desk is a table (or two) where local businesses set up small displays. Just past the front desk is a hallway that leads back to the women's locker room, the tanning area, day care, and a physical therapist area (and maybe some other things... I've never gone back there. This is also where the cardio equipment is (I'll get to that in a bit), with the men's locker room right in the middle. Continuing past the cardio equipment is the stairs up to the weight floor (something I hate after squatting).

Cardio Area: As I said before, this is pretty much the first thing you see when you enter the gym. They have somewhere around 30 treadmills set up to one side of the men's locker room, and roughly the same number of ellipticals, Cross-trainers, upright bikes, recumbent bikes, rowing machines, stair-steppers, and something that allows you to climb stairs, walk, or run (some kind of variable stride length elliptical machine). They don't have TV's in the cardio area, instead every piece of equipment (other than the rowing machines) has its own ~12 inch flat screen cable TV (with headphone jack). Its a nice setup, although I still don't watch TV... I usually just look around it and out the window.

Weight Floor: The weight area is set up so it over looks the cardio area. IXL uses Cybex machines almost exclusively (some Bodymasters stuff, such as the cable towers, a lat tower, T-Bar row, and leg extension/curl machines). The machines are set up around the periphery of the weight area, with the free weights in the middle. Off to one side is the abs/stretching/whatever room and next to that is the spinning room. Behind the spinning room is the two squat racks, two Smith machines, and the gym's lone power rack. Its a good rack, but I'd much rather trade the 6 specialized bench press benches (3 flat, 2 incline, 1 decline) for more cages. They also have a small collection of Cybex plate loaded machins (flat, incline, and shoulder press). The DB collection is limited compared to the larger gyms (like Gold's) going up to 120lbs (I think, I'll check Wednesday). However, they have duplicates up to 75lbs, which is the heaviest UAlbany's gym had.

Staff: The gyms staff are all very friendly, and make an effort to learn as many of the regular's names as they can. The trainers that I have been around are knowledgeable, friendly, and motivating. The staff also works very hard to keep the gym clean and in good repair. Its rare that anything is broken, and when it is, its usually fixed within the week.

People: There's a broad mix of people at IXL, everything from Wallstreet retirees to bodybuilders to high school kids. This is in part due to the fact that IXL is the only gym in the area worth the name (that I know about), and partly due to the fact that the rates for a 12 month membership are great (about $25 a month). The atmosphere generally isn't terribly motivating, and some of the younger guys can get annoying, but the people are generally nice and considerate.

All in all, I think IXL is a good place to train. I'd tell anyone around here to get a membership, however you don't quite get the atmosphere or choices of some of the larger or more "hardcore" gyms.

New Gym Report - Lifetime Fitness Commerce Twp (Michigan)

I recently moved to a new town, and switched to a new gym - I thought I would post up a review of it on here and maybe encourage some others to post up reviews of their gyms.

Gym Name: Lifetime Fitness
Location: Commerce Twp, MI

Initial Impressions: This place is HUGE - like most Lifetime Fitness facilities. There is a very large outdoor pool with an outdoor "Cafe" - every morning when I go in to the gym they are doing water aerobics or something similar. Inside there are 2 pools, and all of the standard Lifetime Fitness things: Hair salon, massage rooms, cafe/store, large gym for basketball, racquet ball courts, rock climbing wall, daycare center, etc. Upstairs is nicely laid out - better than the Lifetime Fitness I used to go to. This time they were smart and actually put bathrooms upstairs!! No more 5 minute walk down to the locker room between sets when a "potty emergency" hits.

Cardio area: HUGE cardio area. Great variety of treadmills, ellipticals of several styles, stairmasters, stepmills, UBEs, etc. My only complaint is that in the 3 weeks I have been going, it seems that more than half of the Stepmills have had "out of order" signs hanging on them, and they aren't getting fixed. There are also 10-12 large TVs in this area - and some of the machines have tuners on them to tune into the tv stations for audio.

"Machine" Area: The weight training area is divided into 2 parts at Lifetime Fitness - the VERY large Machine area, and a smaller "freeweight area". Huge variety of machine, divided up into areas of the body. In general they have 3 to 5 machines for each bodypart from Nautilus, Bodymasters, Lifefitness, TechnoGym, and Cybex - with some of the machines having doubles (TechnoGym pulldowns for example). Machines seem to be in good working order and every day I see staff going around cleaning the machines.

Freeweight Area: This section was a little bit disappointing after leaving the Shelby Twp Lifetime. There is a dumbell section with up to 130lb dumbells (Shelby Twp went up to 150), and there are only single sets of weights over 45lbs - which is really annoying when you need 60s and someone else is doing something with 60s. The "plate loaded" machines are nice - I was hoping to find a nice selection of Hammer Strength machines like the other Lifetimes I have been in, but they weren't there. Instead they have been replaced with Nautilus plate loaded machines... which I am learning are pretty damn nice! There are 2 power racks/cages, 3 different smith machines (I would have done 3 of the same brand, but thats just me), a whole slew of flat and incline benches, a decline bench, and a kettlebell rack. Two of the corners have metal plates in them so that you can use it for t-bar rows, which is a nice touch.

People: I work out at a time between 8 and 10am... and the other people working out at that time seem to be people that are just working out to say they work out. That isn't a good or bad thing - just to give you an idea of what you might run into. It isn't a very "motivating" atmosphere when I am doing a warmup on dumbell curls with the same weight another person is struggling with for bench press (and I am NOT that strong!). The usual characters are still there: The gym that grunts like he is in a porno flick while curling 40lbs, the guy with the beer belly in the underarmour shirt, and the women that put on full makeup and perfume to go do leg press with no weight on the machine.

Staff: Kind of disappointed here. Now this isn't a deal maker or breaker - but when I walked in the door of my old gym the person behind the counter would say "Good morning Aaron" and "Have a good workout!" This new gym - one of the girls behind the counter will say "Hi" and thats about it. The other guy that is there when I come in won't even look up from the counter, and never says a single word. Walking out the door it is the same thing. Again this isn't a deal breaker, but I kind of like being greeted in a friendly way when I am paying $60 a month to be there! This may not matter to some of you though. I do always see the staff cleaning things in the workout area and in the locker rooms.

Overall Impression: I am getting used to the gym. I like the huge variety of equipment, but I am slightly disappointed about the lack of Hammer Strength plate loaded equipment, and also the small supply of dumbells. I wish the atmosphere was a little more inspirational - but that may be just the time of day I workout. I have seem some large people leaving the gym as I am arriving. Working out at the same time as them would be much better for me personally. I would still recommend it to people. I would give it 4/5 stars overall.

The Maine Adventure Race: Race Report

This is the 3rd year this event has been held, and the 2nd year I’ve competed. The previous 2 years only 5 women competed as individuals. Last year I placed second. I trained for the race this year with the goal to win. I had no idea that the number of individual women competing would jump to 18!!

The first leg of the race is 2.5 miles lake kayaking. With 100 kayaks on the water it was complete mayhem. I had 3 accidents with other kayaks, one of which actually spun me in a circle. It was really hard to get going. When I was able to get going again after the 3rd accident I was at the back of the pack. I got it together and passed a lot of people. My finish time was around 31 minutes, which was about a minute and a half faster than last year.

After coming out of the water we ran up the beach and up the road to the bike transition. I got on my shoes, helmet and hydration pack and took off as fast as possible. The first 3.8 miles was on pavement. I did a fair bit of passing. After that it was trail sections interspersed with section of dirt roads. Most of the trails were snowmobile trails. Last year the course was so water logged that a good deal of it had to be hike-a-biked or bikes carried. This year it was totally dry. It was so dry that sand was an issue. Biking in sand is not easy. I lost control going up a sandy hill and had to get off. I felt strong on the bike and really enjoyed it, with the exception of Pratt’s hill. No one rides all the way up Pratt’s hill. It’s about ¼ mile. I’m not sure of the grade, but it has to be over 30%, and it’s soft dirt. Pushing my bike up my calves felt like they were tearing apart. I passed a couple guys who complemented me.

I arrived at the second transition, with my bike leg having taken 1:35-1:40 (14+ miles. My garmin said over 15). I ditched my bike, helmet and pack, and started the 3rd leg, which is a climb up and down Pleasant Mnt. This climb is no joke. Grades over 20% the whole way, I suspect near 30%. It’s a brutal climb up. Climbing is my strength. I passed 12 people and no one passed me. The hike back down was brutal on the quads. I ran as much as I could, but it’s not an easy run. I crossed the finish line at the bottom of the mountain at 2:49. Last year I finished in 3:24. The previous record for my age group was about 3:10. I’m really happy with that progress.

There were 11 women in my age group. I was 3rd. For the individual disciplines, in my age group I was 4th in the kayak, 3rd on the mountain bike and 1st on the hike. Out of the 18 women overall I was 4th. I really couldn’t have expected better, since I’m still pretty new to adventure races.

Bill also competed this year, for the second time. He took 42 minutes off his time from last year!! He received a special trophy at the end of the race called the William Brown trophy. There were 3 William Browns registered. He’s supposed to bring it back next year and give it to another William Brown.

Here is a link to my facebook pics. It should work.

I took the NSCA's CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) exam today. The test was divided into two sections: exercise science foundations, and program design and exercise technique. Having a BS in exercise science and currently working on my MS in exercise physiology, the first section wasn't too terrible. I've also taken a class at my school that is designed to prepare students to take the exam, so while the program design section could have been worse, I definitely wouldn't qualify it as easy. Still, I think I passed. Has anyone else taken or thinking about taking this?
