Soooooo......

It looks like there's yet ANOTHER category in the wonderful physique competition world and it's called "Women's Physique". Here's a description I found online:

The main reason why the women's physique category was created was to allow less muscular women who wanted to compete in bodybuilding but didn't want to have to gain the excessive muscle size, density, and striated muscularity to be competitive in this division. In reality how many women could ever build the kind of muscle as the incredible current Ms Olympia Iris Kyle? With the trend in Figure competitions switching towards a curvier less muscular look, there is a gap created for women athletes who possess nice shape, balance and moderate conditioning. That is why women's Classic physique was added.

I'm sorry, but what exactly does that mean? If someone wants to be curvier than figure, they do Bikini. So now figure is just another bikini division but with mandatory side/back/front poses? Figure was supposed to be the gap between fitness and bodybuilding for women who wanted to be muscular but not too striated like a bodybuilder. But now they have to make a whole other category for women who want to be more muscular than figure, but not as huge as bodybuilders? Is it safe to say that physique is figure but with muscular poses? If that's the case, then i can get behind that because I've always thought it would be cool to do the poses but I didn't want to do bodybuilding.

I dunno. I think they're trying to cater to everyone. First bikini was added, now physique. The fitness category is pretty much gone (I haven't seen a fitness competitor in any recent NPC show). I know it all equals money to the promoters but I have mixed feelings about adding new divisions that are so close to the originals that it seems silly to divide it up at all.

Rant over.

There have been a few physique competitions so far (I think Yetta's going to be competing in one soon), In fact, there's a woman who goes/went to my gym who was an amateur in Figure and BB'ing who just got her pro-card in Physique.

From what I've seen, I think the idea is that the look is more like earlier/classic women's bodybuilding (so yeah, slightly more muscular/conditioned figure with poses), before they got really massive. I think they're hoping that it will supplant BB'ing, and make for a more "mainstream, feminine" look (ie: more participation, attendance... money).

If you wanted to compete again, you'd probably be good at physique.

I think the CrossFit competitions have killed Fitness...

Instead of Body Building and physique, they should just call it "with steroids" and "without". Yeah, I know there are some natty girls out there that do natural BBing in the non-natural shows, but the overall look for the majority in the women's BB competitions is BIG...as in BIG with "help".

I'm sure Yetta is gonna kill in her physique show, but instead of making a whole other category, the judges should just start marking down the HUGE girls in BBing so that the more classic look will then be encouraged.

Agreed... but they probably want to distance themselves with the connotations/perceptions that come with "bodybuilding"

Then there's the male physique. At least the women get to pose

Wow, are you serious? and what is the reasoning behind this category?

Near as I can tell, they want a look that is 'easily' attainable by more guys, a 'dress code' that is not only not a banana hammock but also allows them to skimp on leg training, but is aesthetically pleasing/mainstream enough to bring in the women...

Same as Bikini, but for women rather than the men (or maybe the music industry created hair-metal bands, now that I think about it)

I did a search on google for this last night and I was really shocked. Why such long pants? And the guys have to look hot too (in the face)? I guess next they'll come out with Men's Physique Body Looks in which the face doesn't matter, only the body for the "butter face" challenged guys. You know, so everyone can fit into a category and not feel left out!

And you know, some of us women have larger butts and hips no matter how much we train or condition, so I think they should make a category called Women's Apple Bottoms with just the larger butted women to compete in so that they have a category to fit in too without having to starve themselves down. What do you think?

I agree with all of these... Also the men's physique should wear long pants, so they don't have to train legs at all. In fact, everybody should get a trophy of equal size too! Don't want anybody to feel left out! (Just like elementary school)
