View Full Version : PTAaron's 2011 Olympia Expo Supplement Review Thread

Okay everyone... It is that time of the year again - time for me to post up reviews of all of the supplement samples I got at this year's Mr. Olympia Expo!
This year I am going to do my reviews in a slightly different way - I am going to try to review each product following the "standard" review format so it will be a bit more standardized. Don't worry - I'll be just as much of a smart ass as in previous years! I will also be "double posting" each review both in this thread and under the appropriate section in the "review section" of the forum.
This year there were quite a few new products - so hopefully this will not just be a boring re-hash of previous years. It seems like BCAAs and BCAA products were the "in thing" this time around - and some of them were really tasty! Hopefully the good ones gave me samples - because I don't remember everything I tried during the 4 hours we spent walking around ;)
I also picked up a "6 pack" bag/cooler - it is designed with bodybuilders in mind and has compartments for storing individual meals and supplements. I will post up a review of that once I've had a chance to test it out. Here is their website: www.sixpackbags.com - I bought the 3 meal version in case anyone cares ;)
So anyway - I'm making up a list of "stuff" that I will post up tomorrow. The haul wasn't as impressive as the first year - but was still pretty good!
EDIT: looks like I have 50 products to review - some are repeats of previous years, but I tried to avoid grabbing things I have had before.

sweet...
Do you ever have a problem getting your haul through the airports?

The only problem we ran into this time is that our airline dropped their baggage "allowance" from 50lbs per bag to 40lbs! On the flight down we were both around 35lbs - so we ended up having to buy a cheap duffle bag for the flight home and ended up with 30lbs of stuff in the new bag. We usually bring 2 half full bags so we can load them up for the trip home - but they messed that plan up for us.
We put it all in the checked bags - so no questions so far ;)

Product: Comatose from ALR Industries
Category: Sleep aid

Mixability: n/a (pill - no mixing needed)
Flavor: n/a (pill - no taste)
Effectiveness: 5/5
Value: 1/5
Total: 6/10
This stuff is pretty good at knocking you out... I was asleep within 5 minutes of getting into bed after taking it. The price is what kills me - the best price I found online for it is about $30 for 30 pills - which is not a good value at all.

Product: Super Protein Shot by Body Fortress - Fruit punch
Category: protein drink - premixed
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/e98ae7d3.jpg
Mixability: n/a - already mixed
Flavor: 4/5
Effectiveness: 5/5 - it is protein ... Hard not to be "5"...
Value: 1/5
Total: 10/15
These little protein test tubes always make me laugh... They look more like something that should be sold at an "adult store" than a supplement store!
Anyway - these things are convenient and easy... The flavor is very sweet - kind of like if you drink under-diluted kool aid. Looking around online I see that they run about $1.50-$2 each!! At 26g of protein per serving that is a HORRIBLE deal! My jug of vitamin shoppe protein powder has 94 servings of 24g each and cost me $40 - so that is less than $.50 per serving... The same number of servings of the "shots" would be close to $200! It isn't worth an extra $1-$1.50 to me just to have it pre-mixed!!
I personally would not buy these. If you have spare cash: buy a tub of protein powder and a shaker bottle - and send me the $150 you save!

MusclePharm Assault - Orange Mango Flavor
Category: Pre-Workout
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/54d86907.jpg
Mixability: 5/5 - mixed easily in a shaker bottle with cold water
Flavor: 5/5 - if you like orange/mango you'll love the flavor
Effectiveness: 4/5
Value: 3/5 - 32 servings are $32-36
Overall: 17/20
I liked this one. I took it in the morning before my pre-workout protein shake... and by the time I was arriving at the gym I was feeling it kicking in. It didn't make me jittery like the Hemo Rage
Black Ultra Concentrate that I use as my "gold standard" - which was kind of a good thing. During my workout I felt extremely focused, and had a lot of energy without feeling like I was on speed.
The product description promises energy without a crash - and I feel like it really delivered. An added bonus is that the sample came with a BRIGHT green t-shirt that probably added about 20% to all of my lifts today:
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/c494bfb5.jpg
If it wasn't for the price - this would definitely be on my "must have" list... I can get 45 servings of Hemo Rage for around $30, which is a much better value.

Category: energy/fat burner
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/99ff3158.jpg
Mixability: n/a - pill...
Flavor: n/a
Effectiveness: 5/5
Value: 4/5
Overall: 9/10
The label claims that this one will give you jitter free energy with no crash... I tried it 2 different times...
First test went like this: dose 1 at 2:00 (lunch time) - felt more energy, felt a bit warm... Took a second dose at 6 - again I felt even more energy and felt warmer... but I wasn't sure it was "doing much". I went to bed around midnight - and when I was still laying in bed staring at the ceiling at 2am I realized it REALLY worked!
Second test was very similar to the first ... Boost in energy that came on very subtly ... and lasted a LONG time. This time I was smart and took some melatonin at bed time so I didnt spend the whole night laying in bed not sleeping.
Can't comment on fat burning effects... 2 doses weren't enough for that.

Monster Amino - Fruit Punch Flavor
Category: BCAA supplement
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/ae7aa7b3.jpg
Mixability: 4/5 - it is BCAAs... they don't mix well...
Flavor: 4/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Value: 5/5
Overall: 18/20
I had the Sour Grape flavor last year and it was really good. The flavor this time around was not as good as Sour Grape - but it wasn't bad by any means. BCAAs don't mix well in water, so I wasn't surprised that this one didn't dissolve all the way... there were still a few white BCAA "flakes" floating around after shaking it up and then letting it sit for a few minutes. Effectiveness got the full 5/5 because... well lets face it: the goal was to get in a dose of BCAAs, and this does it ;)

Muscle Milk Graham Cracker Flavor
Category: Meal replacement/Protein drink
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/e78ef9e9.jpg
Flavor: 4/5
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Value: 3/5
Overall: 17/20
Muscle Milk is delicious... almost all of the flavors are delicious... and this one is no exception. I gave it a 4/5 though because the flavor is something that would be good as a meal replacement or bedtime flavor... and I happened to have it before hitting the gym and after drinking a pre-workout drink - it wasn't the right flavor for that!
Mixed up very quickly and easily in a shaker bottle with water. Value is 3/5 because muscle milk is not cheap. You get 16 servings for $24-28, which is not that great of a deal for protein powder... but it is delicious for whatever that is worth.

Muscle Mass Vanilla Flavor from Muscle Nutrition
Category: Protein Powder/Meal Replacement/"Gainer"

Flavor: 5/5
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Value: ??
This stuff is pretty good... mixes really well... and each "serving" is supposed to be 560 calories! Unfortunately the samples I have don't give any real indication as to how many sample packs make up a "serving" - so it could be one or 5 pouches...
I also couldn't find any pricing information online because searching for "Muscle Mass" doesn't bring up anything useful... and their website doesn't have pricing.

Beta BCAA from BBS - "Citrus Punch" flavor
Category: BCAA product
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p206/PTAaron/045aea97.jpg
Flavor: 1/5 ... aftertaste -500/5
Mixability: 2/5
Effectiveness: 1/5
Value: Who cares?
Overall: Don't buy this crap
Okay... I decided to give this a try today at work, and holy crap do I wish I had just decided to stab myself in the eye with a fork instead!!!
Lets talk about the flavor first: At first it tastes like rancid fruit juice mixed with armpit sweat... then the aftertaste gets really nasty. It took 10 minutes for the nasty taste to go away... and during that time I kept wishing that I would lose my sense of taste - but I wasn't that lucky.
Mixability? Well.. it is a BCAA product, which makes for bad mixability in even the best circumstances... but this stuff looked like a snow globe at first (which is normal). I let it sit for 5 minutes to see if it helped - it didn't... more stuff just settled out...
So... this stuff tastes like sh!t and doesn't mix... and for some stupid reason they put 2 grams of beta-alanine in a single serving of it - which means it tastes like sh!t, doesn't mix, AND it makes your face tingle for about 5 minutes after taking it. Don't buy this crap!!
On a side note: Why the hell would you put 2g of beta-alanine in a single serving?? You need 2g in a DAY divided up throughout the day....
Did I mention that this stuff tastes like sh!t and you shouldn't buy it?
PTAaron

As I side note I have tried out Assault from Muscle Pharm 2 more times... and I still give it the same high rating. Even with half the water they suggest it mixes up well - just takes a quick rinse of the cup to get any residual stuff out. Good product.

Couple from this morning... I have 3 others to post up later from yesterday.
Met-Rx "Ultramyosyn Whey Isolate"
Chocolate and Vanilla flavors
Category: Protein/Post workout

Chocolate:
Flavor: 3/5
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 4/5
Value: 4/5
Overall: 16/20
The chocolate flavor was a little "thin" - granted I only had one package, but I used minimal water with it to try to get the full flavor. Mixed up in just a couple of shakes of the cup with cold water. I gave it a 4 on "effectiveness" just because it wasn't that good, so I would be less likely to use it if I were buying my first protein powder.
Vanilla
Flavor: 1/5
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 0/5
Value: 4/5
Overall: 10/20 :repuke:
The vanilla started out as "ok" just like the chocolate. I took a couple small sips to get an idea of the flavor, and it was underwhelming and thin... then I downed the rest of it in a big gulp, set the shaker cup down, took 2 steps and had an involuntary full body shudder followed by gagging... the aftertaste on this was TERRIBLE!! If you have tried a lot of protein powders you know that some people get vanilla right, and some have a really strange aftertaste - well multiply the "strangeness" by about 25 and you get this. I seriously almost threw up... and that is bad when I used to take creatine ethyl ester by just putting the powder in my mouth and chasing it with water without gagging.
Effectiveness of "0" reflects the fact that if I bought this I would throw it away after the first shake I made with it - making it completely ineffective.

but dropped
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 3/5 because of the taste
Value: 3/5 (30 servings for around $20)
Overall: 13/20
This one mixed up instantly very surprising for a product with 10g of BCAAs. Smelled really good so I had high hopes but the flavor was just not good. Not good at all. It was a solid 3 until I finished it
then it dropped quickly to a 2. Not as bad as the crap from BBS, but not something I would try again on purpose.
30 servings for $20 is a decent value if it didnt taste like donkey pee.

“Appletini” flavor? I’m embarrassed to say it, but it tastes really good! Picture a green apple Jolly Rancher candy but a little bit more sour – and you have this. The downside is that it doesn’t mix very well – it looks like a green snowglobe. I would probably buy this… it is pretty darn good.

Flavor: 5/5 - awesome!
Mixability: 5/5
Effectiveness: 3/5
Value: 4/5 - 30 packs for $30
Overall: 17/20
I really wanted this one to be AWESOME - because I love the company! They do an AMAZING job of marketing their products, their ads are always great - I have 2 of them hanging up on my desk for motivation, the "Cage" at the Olympia expo is awesome, and their logo is badass. The problem is that the products don't seem to be up to par with their awesome advertising! I'll try this again tomorrow, but today I was not very impressed. That said - the flavor was fantastic!
Animal Pump is a high octane performance supplement designed to help you blast through plateaus and preconceived limitations. Utilizing a unique, advanced matrix of the most cutting-edge forms of creatine, Animal Pump is designed for the serious lifter--for traditional creatine non-responders and for those who hate the dreaded creatine "bloat".
In addition to a full daily dose of creatine (patented and proven forms including MCC, CEE and TCM), you also get: (1) a fusion of a swelling NO Blast Complex; (2) a shocking Energy Rush Complex; (3) a special antioxidant blend needed for NO products; and (4) potent cell volumizers, all wrapped up in a special nutrient transport complex. From top to bottom, Animal Pump is complete and comprehensive--you get everything you need, precisely dosed in a single convenient "pack".
I noticed a slight energy boost from it, and since I used it on leg day I was expecting ridiculous leg pumps - but there was really nothing spectacular about it. Pretty disappointing because I really wanted to love this one.

Okay... one quick review... I tried out Neurocore last week...
Product: Neurocore from MuscleTech - fruit punch flavor, I think... more on that below.
Category: Pre-workout stimulant
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/public/s9swdFeqeQYNeVG3qbYLpNB8QQc234esyCEVBrBShIeeCTiv03 vRxk7tMTsq9jzB1855HgWi8pyOaO2_HUsBtCEsx1nkUikRM5Z9 oNstrRy_2a_elwlWVgnVF2cBstMhFo05CKhCaQwbQAtPLKTlMK aNaGkePLim3NBBwolPece8q_LcIzAaPcfOX3V50J6UIG9YLFUI XFQ5-k0L182jlc6Niyc
Okay... so Neurocore is the lastest, greatest, fanciest pre-workout supplement from MuscleTech - who has a stellar history of making fantastic products that always live up to their label claims. :suspicious: :eyebrows: Okay - MuscleTech is usually completely full of crap, but I thought I would give this one a fair shake since they did give me a t-shirt and a shaker cup along with my sample. The t-shirt proudly states: "The Most Powerful Pre-Workout Ever" - so it is probably true because who would print a lie on a t-shirt? I will continue after the "formal" review numbers...
Flavor: 1/5
Mixability: 4/5
Effectiveness: 2/5
Value: 1/5 - 12 servings for around $30 (average of prices)
Overall: 8/20
So... first the flavor: This tastes like fruit punch mixed with dog crap. The aftertaste is horrible, and it took about 15 minutes for it to go away. Mixed up OK - but who cares when it tastes so bad...
Effectiveness - well... lets see... halfway through the warmup on my first exercise my heart started racing and I felt like I was going to have a stroke. I guess that is effective as a stimulant - but it didn't do much for my focus, since I was worried about dying rather than trying to get more reps. Minor "pumps" during the workout, but not more than I get from my much more affordable and good tasting Hemo Rage Black. They have over 3 grams of beta-alanine per serving... why is that? Beta-alanine isn't supposed to be taken in large doses... to be effective it should be taken in small doses spaced out during the day - unless the research data has changed? Anyone?
Basically - avoid this sh!t. It tastes bad, it is overpriced, and it won't help your workouts unless feeling like your heart is going to explode is a motivational thing for you. I only took "2/3" of the packet which is the "moderate" dose ... 1/3 is the beginner dose and a full packet is a "hardcore" dose... I guess I am just not hardcore.
